You were correct, dma wouldn't activate due to the ide chipset module not 
being present.
before:
# hdparm -tT /dev/hda
 /dev/hda:
  Timing buffer-cache reads:   500 MB in  2.01 seconds = 248.76 MB/sec
  Timing buffered disk reads:   14 MB in  3.20 seconds =   4.38 MB/sec
after:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   540 MB in  2.00 seconds = 270.00 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:   36 MB in  3.13 seconds =  11.50 MB/sec

HUGE difference in performace when moving files around.
