I'm using a Multitech MT5634MU modem with woody and sarge.  Works fine.
You may have to create the correct device node if you don't already have
it.  For woody, it's /dev/usb/ttyACM0, and for sarge it's /dev/ttyACM0:

# mknod -m 660 $DEVICE c 166 0
# chown root:dialout $DEVICE
