Edit Your /etc/apt/sources.list. IF You want to use testing (not the best for 
beginners) exchange the references to stable (and woody) to testing, except 
the security-upgrades. Sarge (testing) doesn't have any. ;(
Otherwise You might be interested in
http://www.apt-get.org

After adding the sources of Your choice, do a
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
