Re: toshiba satellite 2770 *newbie alert*

First here is somme link where you could find some information for toshiba
http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/toshiba.html

I have looked for your model but I did'nt find it... but it look to be very
closed to that model
http://tuxmobil.org/toshiba_s2800_100_e.html

Now, lets talk about debian...
I advice you to go and download the debian installer, it is in beta test but
it works good and it detects more material at the installation

If you have big trouble with the installation, maybe try an other like Suse,
it works very well and it is much easier to install...

Try the debian installer with a kernel 2.6

I think that the problem come from the psmouse module, try that
$ lsmod
and look if you have psmouse module loaded, if not do that
# modprobe psmouse
And test it

I use kdm because I like it, use the one you like...

Maybe try to boot the knoppix with knoppix26 without scsi, (I don't remember
the option for disabling scsi support but hit F3 at boot and you will see the
options)

What kind is your modem? ethernet? or usb?

first your problem is that you tried to launch shutdown command in user, so
when the system look in your path variable, it can't find it it is normal
because shutdown is in /sbin/shutdown and you don't have /sbin in your path
and second you must be root to use shutdown, so even if youtype /sbin/shutdown
it will tell you something like "you don't have permission to do that"

Yes you can select some module here but it is a little too complicate to
explain, use the debian installer or try Suse it will be easier... when you
ll be more familiar with the kernel linux you will understand everything
about that

You must add an entry into your boot program (grub or lilo) you use a debian
so everything is explained in the configuration file :) You just need to
uncomment some lines

The debian installer is a beta... so you have sometimes trouble... I advise
you to go http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ and burn the latest
version of the debian installer... or easier, try suse

When you are in the kde desktop with your knoppix, there is somewhere (I don't
where) something like "install the knoppix on harddisk" so it will "copy" the
system of your cd to your harddisk...so yes you will have a graphical
interface working

My final advice : try Suse, look in a press shop, there is sometimes magazines
with complete distribution, you will be more familiar with "gnu/linux world"
and you will be able to install a debian without trouble... or do like me,
find a friend or association to explain you...

I hope it will help you,
