Generally for 2.6 kernels you should just use the pcmcia in the kernel.

This is for "Atheros" chipset - often "built-in" to a laptop (i.e.
mini-pci) cards supporting 802.11a/b/g.

Indeed.  I believe that the prism54 chipset is the only 802.11g one that
has GPL native Linux drivers, and hence is included in the latest 2.6.x
kernels.

So although I have atheros chipset, because that's what is built-in to
my Thinkpad R50p, if I were to buy a new card I would be buying one
based on the prism54 chipset.
