That's where the problem was:
> image=/vmlinuz
> label=Linux
> initrd=/boot/initrd.gz
I changed the last line here to
initrd=/initrd.img
reran lilo, and rebooted and selected the default kernel in lilo.
This is typed when running a debian 2.4.25 kernel. :-)
