Problem installing w/SMC 8036TX NIC

Greetings-

i'm trying to install debian on a new (to me) laptop, an IBM Thinkpad 240.
I put an SMC 8036TX card in it, which is a CardBus 10/100 NIC. I've tried
using the floppy images for woody and for sarge, to no avail - in neither
case can I get the network up, so I can't continue the installation.

In both cases, I *can* get pcmcia working, and the link and activity
lights on the network card light up appropriately. But the install
routines don't recognize the card automatically, and when I try to
manually install the tulip driver (which I understand from the web is the
right driver), I get no errors, but no network device either.

Any advice? I'd prefer not to have to go buy another card!

Thanks.
