I too have a Latitude (C610), and use an External monitor frequently.
Here is my only Monitor section in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier      "Dell Trinitron"
        HorizSync       30-107
        VertRefresh     48-120
        Option          "DPMS"
EndSection

This works just fine whether using the external monitor, or the laptop
display.
