Running in low power mode, with screen etc turned off, but keeping all
state in RAM, which needs to be refreshed constantly.

Sleep mode ;)

As opposed to suspend to disk, where all memory state is copied to disk
and restored to memory at the next boot. (This is also possible, using
some nice kernel patches)
