Removing apmd from my system seems to have fixed the hanging problem.
There is much in the past few emails that I need to digest (and I want to
do some more research on the problem). Of course I too am away for the
Easter weekend (plus I have 65 exams to mark).

Thanks for all your help. I'll be back next week possibly with a few more
questions and possibly with the start of a mini HOWTO for laptop power
management if I can't find one today.
