using a 2.4.18 kernel with _loadable_ sound modules, i proceed as
follows:

$ insmod ac97_codec

[no complaints]

$ insmod -v i810_audio
...
Using /lib/modules/2.4.18sound_modules/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o
Symbol version prefix 'smp_'
/lib/modules/2.4.18sound_modules/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o:
init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
      You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

however, 'dmesg' shows no complaints either:

$ dmesg
...
Intel 810 + AC97 Audio, version 0.21, 12:46:51 Apr 10 2003

question: is the prefix 'smp_' suspicious? something to do with the
kernel ?

cheers,

markus
