Hmm, I thought the standard Woody boot disk (2.2.x kernel, the one on
the first CD) did not include the usb drivers. What boot disc are you
using, and what is the laptop? 

Why do you believe it is USB doing it?  Perhaps you can turn off the
USB controller in BIOS.
