XFree86 4.1.0 with ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 64 MB

Hi,
I have installed Woody on my laptop (VIA KT333 board).
I know that the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 is supported by XFree 4.3.0. Unfortunately I cannot get it to work with Woody's 4.1.0. I used the vga server and added a videoram 65536 line in the device section. Nevertheless in the XFree-log the server says "videoram 65536 (using 256k) and then it cannot use screens other than 320x200 because for higher resolutions there is "insufficient memory". I mean, X DOES come up with said resolution. How can i "convince" X to appreciate my full 64 MB of ram and let me use at least the vga server at 1024x768? I think the ati server does not recognize a valid device.
I even tried backports of 4.3.0 from www.apt-get.org but there was a library that was not found. Strange thing.

Regards,
Volker Sturm
