troubles with my modem ;o((

hey folks

i'm not very happy with my modem, because somehow it doesn't want to be recognized. well, i think, the problem might be rather with myself then with my computer, cause i don't really know what to do..
this is about all i know:

Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?

Please read the FAQ at http://open.nit.ca/wvdial/

If you still have problems, send mail to wvdial-list@lists.nit.ca.

i installed the driver from that intel page for MD5628D-L-B
there were only drivers for MD5628D-L-C and MD5628D-L-B and, the one for ~-C didn't get installed in the first place, some error. and this one, well, the modules get loaded, but wvdialconf doesn't seem to look at the place it's supposed to look at, which i think, should be:
/dev/ham
which is:
crw-rw-r-- 1 root root 240, 1 Mar 1 16:11 /dev/ham
i already tried changing the group to dialout, but there was no difference, the modem was still not found. and, by forcibly looking there with setserial -a /dev/ham the screen and everyting locks..no reboot possible.. i really don't know what to do, don't really know anything about serial ports and so on.. would be very grateful if anybody could give me some hints or anything. i read the linmodem and winmodem howto, and tried the serial-howto (which i didn't quite understand) and i .. well i guess i'd be happy to get some help ;o)
cheers
gaia

what am i supposed to do with my serial port??
