Freeze on PCMCIA insert

I've been trying to get kernel 2.4.22 running properly on my Toshiba Satellite 2060CDS, with little success.

The system boots, and pcmcia-cs starts successfully, but insertion of my network card (3com 3c574_cs) causes a freeze, with only the message "".

This does not occur under woody's stock 2.2.20 kernel.

I'm new to laptops and PCMCIA, and don't really know how to go about probing this problem.

I would appreciate any suggestions on what could be the problem, things i might try to correct it, or laptop-newbie oriented readings that might help me understand this better.

I would rather spend 10 hours reading someone else's source code than
10 minutes listening to Musak waiting for technical support which isn't.
