Well, the trident fb driver in 2.4.20 works for me, but I don't use it
as a module. I have it built in the kernel. I seem to recall that
you have to enable the "experimental" prompts on the kernel build
configuration to be able to compile the trident fb driver.
In lilo.conf I use the following append for the fb-enabled kernel
image section:
video=trident:800x600,bpp=16,center,fp
It works very nice. fbi, dvifb, etc. run flawlessly. Even
mplayer -vo fbdev (no acceleration, though).
All that being said, note now that currently I'm not using fb because
of one of the swsusp issues I mentioned. As I said, when X gets
confused by swsusp, sometimes I can fix it by switching to a text
console and back. When using fb the card never leaves graphic mode,
not even if I stop X entirely. Then this "fix" won't kick in, and I
have to reboot.
To disable fb I just remove the video=... append in lilo.conf.
