I too had what appears to be this problem. After patching the 2.4.21
kernel with the acpi patch, compilation failed somewhere within the
ipmi code.

Since I don't think I need this ipmi code, my solution was to disable
it in the kernel config. My laptop now runs ok with the acpi-patched
2.4.21 linux kernel.
