There are probably a few ways, but the way I test modems is to use
wvdial and see if it finds the combo modem part of things on the card. I
use this card a lot with Debian Unstable and Windows 2000 Pro on my
laptop. You could just do a wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf and see if it
finds it. Wvdial is a pretty useful little dialup program as well.
