The -s option is doing what it's supposed to do.  The function of
Suspending to Disk (S2D) is run from the BIOS.  On my Dell, I have to use
the special Fn key combination to do this.  Check you system for the
special key combination to initiate the S2D.

Also, there should be a setting in your BIOS under the power
management section to do S2D when the battery power gets down to a
specified level.
