Inspiron 8200 apm suspend tone

I'm running Debian Woody with kernel 2.4.18

After booting the laptop:
- When I suspend-to-ram a first time no tone occurs.
- After resuming if I suspend-to-ram any additional times
a terribly loud tone sounds just before it is powered down
to suspend status.

Neither "xset b off" or "setterm -blength 0" affect this.

The tone sounds whether I suspend with Fn+Esc or "apm -s".

The tone sounds whether or not I am in X when I suspend.

I don't know whether there is an internal PC speaker or
whether this tone is being generated through the sound
card. I do not use the sound card at all and have not
enabled support for it in the kernel.

Is there some way to disable this? Even if it means no
other sound will be available that is acceptable at least
for now.

If there is a seperate PC speaker inside I'm just about
to the point of opening up the case and de-soldering its
connections.

Any suggestions?
