Hi Jacob-

Doing the research always seems like an interesting part especially with
laptops.  One place I always consult when I have questions is the Linux
on Laptops website.  As an example for the Thinkpad 770, there are a lot
of entries of folks who have gotten the laptop working, what they had to
do to make it work, and any unusual or special requirements. Here is the
first page I found on your particular laptop:
