the debugging output from syslog with a line in etc/syslog.conf like:
daemon.*;local2.*     /var/log/ppp-debug.log
as pppd uses the daemon facility to report its debugging.

Generally i recommend three things to do:
Use wvdial to gain the basic setup parameters,
transfer them to a ppp peerfile and check them with pon;
Trie to log in with minicom;
Use AT&F to reset your Modem (instead of ATZ ).
