audio on cpq presario 1720us (i810_audio)

hi,

i few days back, i saw a thread about i810_audio. i am using it for my
audio controller an intel ac'97. i had sound working well and good
with redhat just by inserting this module. but on woody, i seem to be
missing sound. so i did almost everything i saw flying around in that
thread. i do remember getting xmms to play by starting up esd after a
few hours of tweaking around, but i have no way of simulating that
again!

let me get this straight: esd allows multiple applications access to
the sound device. so as such, i must be able to get audio from a
single app? i don't think i am getting that. secondly (i am really a
novice here) whats the relation between esd and aumix?

another thing, aumix can at least control the beeps. but only root can
do that! does it have something to the way i have my modules.conf?

### update-modules: start processing /etc/modutils/audio
#### sound card configuration -- intel i810 motherboard card
alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio
post-install sount-slot-0 /usr/bin/aumix -f /etc/aumixrc -L >/dev/null
2>&1 || :
pre-remove sound-slot-0 /usr/bin/aumix -f /etc/aumixrc -S >/dev/null
2>&1 || :
# end sound card config

as you can see, i am using aumix instead of aumix-minimal (which is
what i used to use on redhat though i am not sure what the difference
is). also i did not seem to find a default aumixrc, so i created one
by looking at the manpage.

dmesg reads:

i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels.
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: 0x4144:0x5361 (Unknown)
i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0 Unable to map surround DAC's (or DAC's not
present), total channels = 2

i am not sure what that thing about DAC's not present means.

any help, direction appreciated.
