Debian install assistent for Laptops - utopie or already started?

Salve,

I think everybody of you has already thought, "why isn't there a package
for intstalling Laptops automaticaly or assisted?"

Ok, I know that Debian is not an OS that it's main feature is"clickable and
coulored" ;) I have choosed it because I want to learn using the shell
and I was impressed that for all new audio-hardware and audio-software
I was looking for, most information and packages I found were from
Debian-developer :)
But I see the main characteristic of Debian, it is used by people
which like to develop.

Installing GNU/Linux on Laptop is still quite tricky, and nowadays
it's not enougth to run X, the X-Server must be fast enought to
show divix - just as an example.
IMHO are the try to document how to install GNU/Linux on laptop xxxxxx
on personal webpages, and a try to link this, quite nice, but this is not
perfekt - webpages will "fade away" and these essential informations
are not part of the install - packages.

It is inefficent that most solved problems are still new problems for
laptop-owners and reasked on mailinglist like this. More productive
where one packages with all these informations.

You may know Knoppix (www.knoppix.org), based on Debian with a
magical starting skript. Just an install option for the 1000 most
populare Laptops would be smart:

-- Laptop install assistant

-> A1:choose by modell |or| B1:choose by hardware
A1       -> A2:choose  a manufaktur
A2       -> A3:choose a modell from list
B1&A3 -> C1:modify hardware list
-----------------
Beside such an install assistant would an infopage for laptops
installable as packages very usefull - no searching via internet,
just apt-get install laptopinfo-toshiba-libretto-50ct
to have all informations the comunity know about this model on
my pc.
-----------------
As I wrote with subject "Etherboot via PCMCIA for cdrom-less laptops"
there is a need to fork an posibility to install form an tftp-source, or
just one Debian server via PCMCIA-networkcard.

Cool would be a possibility that the PC which is going to be installed
offer VCN to an installing source. The installed PC would be a black-box
boot via PXE and the installing server could install the black-box.
If you would have to install more PCs, you can sit just in front of one
machine and switch to the several VCN terminals of your black-boxes:
Install party as one man show *g*
-----------------

Beside of tuxmobil(ex.Mobilix) do you know projects to collect informations
about laptops at one place to become part of Debian-source?

If there not such a project, would you interested to start it/join it?
Understud my right, I love Debian and I think people should learn
more about how to use it - than fighting about how to install it
on a laptop :)

°<\:o) Alaaf - Struesschen  - Kamelle....¹
rob

¹We have the fifth season in Aachen(Oche), Koeln/Cologne(Koelle): it's
Carneval-time at the Rhine-region, the most 5 important words:

"Alaaf" is greeting-cry of peace and fun, used very often, mostly 3 times ;)
	cityname - "Alaaf", cityname "Alaaf", cityname "Alaaf".
           every cityname has an dialect name Aachen = Oche
           Koeln = Koelle
           instad of citynames could it be replaced with group names....
"Buetzchen" kisses on cheeks
"Struessche" is give away between man and woman/ woman and man;
"Prost": cheers when you enjoy together a beer,
"Kamelle" are sweets, not only for the kinds, which get no "Buetzchens",
             Struessche or beer ;)

And now together - you all cry "Alaaf!":

I:"Debian-Laptop?!" you: "Alaaf!"
I:"GNU/Linux?!"       you: "Alaaf!"
I:"Debian-Laptop?!" you: "Alaaf!"

When you now haven't realy understud what carneval is,
you must come, join and celebrate it here :)
