Hi Ryan,
I don't have particular experience with this laptop, but in short you
should:
- check your BIOS options (just in case)
- check whether kernel supports IrDA, in /boot/config-*
- use SIR instead of FIR, so look with `dmesg | egrep tty' for your
*serial* IrDA port
- configure /etc/irda.conf accordingly
- /etc/init.d/irda restart
- use irdadump
