Just to close this one myself, I found that if I turn on the
numlock on the standard keyboard and left it on when I disconnect
the keyboard, the numlock keypad is active on the laptop
keyboard.  That's what was causing my issue.  :-)

Sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious...at least for me.
