Good Luck! :)  I've got a custom laptop based on a Chembook something
model and the cooling fans don't shut off either.  I think it's a design
thing with the laptops.

it's really weird. With Windows, the fans cycle on and off but with Linux they just stay on. I've also had this same behavior with my inspiron 5000.

/sbin/update-rc.d -f xdm remove should do the trick by taking xdm out of
the startup sequence.

thanks! where is the startup sequence? I'm still trying to track down how everything kicks off in Debian. By the way, pointers to documentation for this kind information is quite welcome.
