I don't recommend changing the XF86Config-4 unnecessarily.

that certainly won't give the expected results...
If he allows only modes "1600x1200" and "800x600", he certainly will get
nicer results with video players (well, they'll use the more suiteable
resolution supported by the hardware, and then use xvideo to scale the
video to that resolution) - but it won't give him a nicer picture for
1024x768 - a resulution his display cannot display without
interpolating.
