Getting X working on Thinkpad A31p

Dear All

I'm installing Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 on an IBM Thinkpad A31p, all is going smoothly apart from a couple of areas. One is XFree86 4.1, which will install but not run. I found some leads at the linux-laptop page (http://www.linux-laptop.net) and linuxcare.

It seems that the A31p has an ATI Radeon Mobility chip which is not supported by XFree86 4.1. Some Thinkpad users have had luck installing XFree86 4.2 and a couple of extra drivers and/or kernel patches. This is the road I'm going to try. A couple of questions before I do:

1. I have the XFree86 4.2 source; I imagine it would be better to install this as a .deb than from source directly. Is this correct? If so, how go I go about it (or where would I find such info in man/info/howto/etc?).

2. I'm installing the bf2.4 flavour of Debian Woody. Installing kernel modules, the video module aty128fb (for ATI Rage 128) installed fine, but radeonfb failed with a 'No such device' error. Yet the A31p does have a Radeon chip. What's happening?

Any leads wrt either of the above would be much appreciated.

I've benefitted greatly from the information other Thinkpad users have posted on the web and, once I've got X working, I'll make my experiences available in a useful format on the linux-laptop aite or any other appropriate location.

Best wishes

Ivan Uemlianin
