Toshiba Tecra 730XCDT

Hi all

I can't get X running on this old laptop. 

XF86Setup, though,  is succesful: it completes its duties sending compliments 
about the X server up and running. 

If I then start X (with startX), it crashes, but without any 'fatal error' 
message. Only a warning about the mouse. 

does that make any sense to any of you?
