windows leaves the built-in eepro100 in a quite wonky state. by default,
you can't use the eepro100 after a softboot after windows. there is a
tool at donald beckers site to reset the chip (pcisomehting).

i never managed to do a network install after loadlin on my Z505 (same
HW, but US version). i just copied the base system over to the windows
partition, installed from there, and after a hard reboot the eepro100
worked fine.

i'm pretty sure your friend didn't do a netboot during install. or at
least not after softbooting from windows.
