There should be v3 X servers, such as xserver-svga.  Can you get and 
install that, or whatever server is approapriate for your laptop?  (What 
kind of laptop, what kind of video?)

The short answer is yes, XFree 3.x servers are available under 
woody/sid, for just this reason.
