I recently bought a Compaq Presario 1800. Mine has a PIII-700, 128MB
RAM, and 8MB video. You can get more memory and a faster processor. It
also has a 7200RPM hard drive that doesn't seem to be getting too hot
(even when running statistical models on large data files). The onboard
ethernet, linmodem, sound, and video are all very workable with linux.
The debian install (sid) was a breeze. I'm also close to getting the
DVD player to work. I have never like Compaq desktops, but my
expectations have been far exceeded with this laptop. The downside for
many people will be that it weighs more than average since the drives
are not swapable. For what I need to do with it, though, power was
slightly more important than ultra-portability. Surprisingly, buying it
direct from Compaq was as cheap as any other vendor I could find - local
or internet.
