But on a local network, you should have no gateway!  I'm not shure
where it is configured, but try to remove the gateway from the
conffiles.  With the network card only,  netstat -r should have no
line with a * in the Destination column.

And don't change without remembering how to change back if it doesn't work...

HTH, but if the problem persists,send the output of `/sbin/route -n'.
