I suppose you use framebuffer.
Unfortunately vesa-framebuffer can handle only 1280x1024. Your screen
can handle 1600x1280. That's what you see, when you switch between X
and Con.

Press the Fn-F7 key. This should raise the fonts back to fullscreen.

DOS doesn't know anything about framebuffer!
