On my i8000 you can press Fn-F7 (font) and it will toggle to a larger
font size that fills the whole screen.

I'm not sure whether this is persistent but mine seems to be.

P.S. When you upgraded did you go from Ximian Gnome to the standard
Gnome packages?  I'm thinking of upgrading soon and am wondering about
that step.
