Configure the serial device of your modem and then run
wvdialconf. This will detect you modem by probing the
configured serial devices and then setup wvdial for use. You'll
then only need to add phone numbers to /etc/wvdial.conf as
indicated to use it.
Configuring the modem's serial devices is a matter of loading the
correct module. For example, I use a Xircom combo card, and when
I load the module for it both the ethernet and the modem devices
are configured, as shown in this syslog snapshot:
