That seems to be in agreement with what I have heard elsewhere.

My machine had  BIOS revision A03 when I got it. I have tried re-flashing
the BIOS to various other revisons with no effect. Re-flashing to an
_older_ BIOS revision (i.e. A02) can not be done. 

So far, all the evidence suggests that I will have to either (a) cough up
for the connercial driver (_not_ a very "Debian" thing to do :-) ) or
(b) put up with no sound [1]. But I would definitely welcome any further
suggestions.
