PCMCIA troubles...

I have a TRENDnet PCMCIA 33.6K Fax Modem card. I also have two laptops, one old
and decrepit (486) running RedHat 5.2, with ISA single PCMCIA slot; here's the
output of dmesg on this one:

Linux PCMCIA Card Services 3.1.8
  kernel build: 2.2.14-5.0 #3 Thu Oct 12 20:23:24 EDT 2000
  options: [apm]

    host opts [0]: none
ISA irqs (scanned) = 3,4,5,7,9,10,11,15 status change on irq 15
cs: IO port probe 0x1000-0x17ff: excluding 0x1000-0x100f 0x1020-0x1027 0x1040-0x1047 0x1080-0x108f 0x10a0-0x10a7 0x10d0-0x10df 0x11f0-0x11f7 0x1378-0x137f 0x1398-0x139f 0x13f0-0x140f 0x1420-0x1427 0x1440-0x1447 0x1480-0x148f 0x14a0-0x14a7 0x14d0-0x14df 0x15f0-0x15f7 0x1778-0x177f 0x1798-0x179f 0x17f0-0x17ff

cs: IO port probe 0x0a00-0x0aff: clean.

And another one with a PCI CardBus PCMCIA slot, running under Debian 2.2_r2:

Linux PCMCIA Card Services 3.1.24
  kernel build: 2.4.2 #2 Sun Apr 8 16:51:17 CEST 2001
  options: [pci] [cardbus] [apm]
Intel PCIC probe: PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:0a.0
  TI 1211 rev 00 PCI-to-CardBus at slot 00:0a, mem 0x10000000
host opts [0]: [ring] [pci + serial irq] [pci irq 10] [lat 168/176] [bus 2/5]
ISA irqs (scanned) = 3,11 PCI status changes
cs: IO port probe 0x0c99-0x0cff: clean.
cs: IO port probe 0x0800-0x07ff: clean.
cs: IO port probe 0x0100-0x04ff: excluding 0x398-0x39f 0x4d0-0x4d7
cs: IO port probe 0x0a00-0x0aff: clean

In the first laptop, the modem is correctly identified and works OK:

[root@fnord /root]# cardctl status
Socket 0:
  5V 16-bit PC Card
  function 0: [ready]

[root@fnord /root]# cardctl config
Socket 0:
  Vcc 5.0V Vpp1 0.0V Vpp2 0.0V
interface type is "memory and I/O"
  irq 3 [exclusive] [level]
  Speaker output is enabled
  function 0:
    config base 0x0200
      option 0x61 status 0x08 pin 0x00 ext 0x00
    io 0x02f8-0x02ff [8bit]

[root@fnord /root]# cardctl ident
Socket 0:
  product info: "RIPICAB", "RC288ACL", "021", "A"
  manfid: 0x0013, 0x0000
  function: 2 (serial)

On the new laptop (Compaq Armada 100) I get a following message:

cardccs: socket 0 timed out during reset

[root@fnord /root]# cardctl status
Socket 0:
  3.3V 16-bit PC Card
  function 0: [busy] [wp]

[root@fnord /root]# cardctl config
Socket 0:
  Vcc 3.3V Vpp1 3.3V Vpp2 3.3V

[root@fnord /root]# cardctl ident
Socket 0:
  no product info available

Obviously, it is feeding the modem 3.3V instead of 5V, but why?
Is this a problem with the modem card or with the laptop? And
what the fsck can I do about it? This new laptop has an in-build
winmodem, so getting the PCMCIA modem up and running is quite high
on my priorities list... I want to move my mail and news to the
new machine.

Any help will be appreciated. :) TIA.

Leslie
