it would probably help if i let people know that i am fairly familiar with

i had all right... which is why i was so confused...

what worked was mounting the dos partition that the files were in first
and pointing it at the mount point, rather then trying to point linux at
the dos partition...

yeah, the boot floppies are useless with the external pcmcia floppy
drive...

i installed redhat, then used that to create a dos partition and ftp the
files into it, then bootstrap the install out of that...
