preconfigure = some package required another to not only be unpacked, but
configured first.  (keyword "pre-depends")  For some reason the other 
package failed to get configured ...

Now, first I'd be tempted to say "find the pre-depended package, and find
out what's wrong in its configure scripts" but, I've had that come up to
me before and the errors look subtly different.  It's a little more clear
which app hates you, for instance.

I normally stick with apt, and use console-apt for full screen work, so I
don't know how to determine if dselect is helping or hurting.
