hm, you never even touch X?  What I mean is, if you boot into single
user mode, where you're sure X has no chance of starting, does your
problem still occur?  Could a buggy X server based on framebuffers
cause this problem?
(I'm interested in the solution to this as I was just about to try out
the fb devices on my laptop...)
