I see that you have a Savage IX/MX.  Have you tried the X server/module from <http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html>? (If you're using it, the page has a link to an XF3 driver that the same person is developing)  This may or may not solve your problems, but it will assuredly be much faster than whatever you are using now...
