First try 'ifconfig' to see if the interface is really there.
If there is no 'eth0' don't bother trying the ping anything else.
First get your interface up and running.
If the interface is there, but no IP address has been assigned,
turn of dhcp and give yourselfe a static IP address ( ask you
network administrator) and configure network.opts. (Don't forget
to set you default gateway aswell.GATEWAY="xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx")

If you have you interface, and you gateway address then it
should at least posible to ping the DNS server.
