I haven't tried woody yet because I think it uses XFree 4.x and the
VMWare folks aren't supporting that yet. Besides, this is my
production laptop we're talking about, so I'm just a little
cautious...

What I did to get sound working on my 8100 under stable was the
following:

1. Download the kernel sources, build and install a custom kernel.
   (In my experience, the stock kernels contain all sorts of stuff
   I'll never need on my laptop.)

2. Download the latest ALSA sources, build and install drivers from
   there.

3. Read the excellent sound info at
