Thinkpad external devices

Hi,
    When I tried to plug the external monitor and mouse to my thinkpad(I
    series 1400, 2621), none of them worked. 

    I never think that I need to do anything to get them working? Am I
    missing something? Or do I need to install some addtional packages??
