Ok, so is the chipset the same?

If so, check out his XF86Config file.  You can always remove the
references to higher resolutions.  If his file is generated by many of
the standard tools, it will have all standard resolutions from 640x480
on up -- likely 800x600 is in the file already.

There are several entries in XF86Config files.  One group lists the
video details of how to achieve a particular resolution, later sections
decide which resolutions the machine will actually use.

Ctrl-Alt-+ (that's holding the Control and Alt keys down and also
pressing the plus sign '+' key at the same time) will cycle through the
available resolutions.

Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace will kill the X server.  If you get a bad resolution,
and the Ctrl-Alt-+ doesn't get you out of it, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace should
put you back in text mode.
