Curious, the line in inetd.conf is already there:
telnet          stream  tcp     nowait  telnetd.telnetd /usr/sbin/tcpd
/usr/sbin
/in.telnetd
so that can't be the problem.

This just gets stranger and stranger, no?

I agree, just going ahead with ssh makes sense, but all the same, it would
be nice to be able to solve this problem with telnet in principle.
Is there any chance that ssltelnet (or telnet-ssl) could be interfering with
telnet?
Next idea?  :)
