I use a PCMCIA based CD too.  When you insert it, you are adding a new 
IDE interface.  Since each IDE chain holds two, /dev/hdb is the second
item on your internal chain (probably forever useless).  

Your CD will should be /dev/hdc.  It's pretty rare for it to come up as 
the secondary and be /dev/hdd, but if you're at a text console when you 
insert it, card services should actually mention the dev it got assigned.

It's -very- uncommon but when I'm being experimental :) card services
might not properly "give back" the second IDE when I release it, and
if that's the case it might come up as a third or even fourth IDE chain
when reinserted.  If you're doing something crazy with devs that might
cause that, just keep going up by letter pairs -- or clear your experiment 
with a reboot when it gets past your pre-created nodes... 

(btw I haven't got that effect anymore since I stopped messing with an
apparently unsupported LS-120 pcmcia device.)
