I had same problem for a short time since I had to use standard VGA in my

I prefer IceWM myself, not Gnome nor KDE. It allows one to press Ctrl+Alt
and then drag (with left mouse button) windows from any point around the
screen, so you can move windows up until the OK button shows. However, one
must remember to *disable* the command "limit (initial) window size to
screen" in IceWM, or otherwise the buttons will be completely out of the
window.
Yes, I think if you want a nice small word processor, Ted is a good choice.
It appears better and probably slightly more lightweight than Abiword.
I use myself LyX, which is great, but not a traditional office application.
